ICAR–Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Nimbudera, organized the “Khet Bachao Abhiyan 2026” from
1 st to 30 th June 2026 across the Rangat, Mayabunder, and Diglipur blocks of North & Middle
Andaman district to promote sustainable agricultural practices and create awareness among
farmers regarding soil health management, balanced nutrient utilization, and eco-friendly
farming technologies suitable for island conditions. The programme aimed to sensitize
farmers on the importance of organic and natural farming practices, green manuring,
biofertilizers, and sustainable nutrient management approaches for improving soil fertility,
enhancing crop productivity, and reducing dependency on chemical inputs.
During the technical sessions, special emphasis was given to Integrated Nutrient Management
and the adoption of sustainable practices such as green manuring, vermicomposting,
biofertilizer application (Azotobacter and Azospirillum), and biofertilizer-based seed
treatment for improving crop establishment and maintaining soil health. The programme also
highlighted scientific paddy cultivation practices and inclusion of pulses in rice fallow areas
to enhance nutrient cycling, diversify cropping systems, and improve farm income. Climate-
friendly practices such as organic and natural farming, efficient resource management, and
integrated approaches were promoted for sustainable agricultural production under island
conditions.
The programme was conducted under the guidance of Dr. Y. Ramakrishna, Principal
Scientist & Head (I/c), ICAR–KVK Nimbudera, and Dr. Jai Sunder, Director (Act.),
ICAR–CIARI, Sri Vijayapuram. A total of 458 farmers and 178 farmwomen, actively
participated and benefited from the programme.
