ICAR–CIARI Achieves Design Registration for Innovative “Dweep Nicobari Aloo Peeler”

ICAR–CIARI has developed a farmer friendly and easy to use tool called the “Dweep Nicobari Aloo Peeler.” The tool has been granted a design registration by the Patent Office, Government of India. It facilitates the peeling of Nicobari Aloo (Dioscorea alata), a crop widely cultivated in the region, particularly by tribal communities and local settlers who often face difficulty in manually removing its tough outer skin. The newly developed peeler efficiently removes the skin without damaging the edible fleshy portion, thereby saving time, reducing drudgery, improving processing efficiency, and enhancing value addition. The technology was developed by the scientific team comprising Dr. I. Jaisankar, Principal Scientist; Dr. T. Subramani, Principal Scientist; and Dr. E. B. Chakurkar, former Director, ICAR-CIARI.
